This is a dream come true! The Innova guys stayed through Sat. and dug out and framed pretty much all the tees pads that are accessible to get concrete too. Tomorrow, they are coming back and staying til Thursday to pour the concrete!! :D As usual, the more help N hands the better, so if you can please come out and help.

As far as the tee pads that can't be reached for concrete (most of the back 9). Wood frames/decks are going to be constructed and rubber pads will be nailed down to them. They will be level and should drain/dry fast. This project should be getting under way the following week!

BIG THANKS TO INNOVA, and the ASHE Co. PARK's and REC Dept.!!!

That's awesome, but you need to have a sign that states "please wipe feet for getting on deck". Hope they can get to at least 11. That deck will make the rocks in front of the pad out of play and I really like that feature now.

I was out at the course yesterday for the 2nd half of the day and got to help pour/concrete some of the tee pads! :D

Another BIG THANKS to INNOVA and the Ashe Co. Parks and Rec Dept (this is just one of the many Thanks you will hear me say). They are putting a lot of time, effort, and money into this project, and I'm embrassed that no locals have come out to help.

The High Country can boast one of the best courses in the world.

With only 16 days left to the Throwdown, the opportunity is still there to help? Work days are going on just about every day now. So again, PLEASE, if you have a few hours to give, let me know and I will be happy to point you in the right direction. Thank you!

Get yourself a little course karma before the Throwdown and sign up here or call me if you'd like to help spruce up the course? Only 7 days left!!

Just to let you all know. As of right now, the HCDGC has zero volunteer hours (other than myself, and Jake for a couple a few weeks back). :(

On the flip side, Innova and the Parks and Rec staff continue to work their butts off for all of us. Please be sure to say Thank you!

This course is really something to be proud of.

When I was up there two days ago I spent about 15 minutes with Harold throwing some shots on 17 to see where the new pin should go. That's dedicated volunteer work right there.

Thanks, you gave us a good example of what bad shots will do. Where's hole 11's flag?

This is what I think is the best solution. It can be as high as we want it, and it should never interfere with any throw.

Image

Image

A cable or rope suspended between two trees above the basket. A wood placard bolted onto the rope.
The wooden piece would be two triangles made from 3/4" or 1" plywood, isoceles triangles approximately 15" on the base and 20" in height. Painted yellow. Possibly with a number "11" on it.
The rope should be placed between the two pieces of wood, which are then bolted together, at least 2 at the top above the rope and 1 down at the bottom. If that doesn't feel secure, 2 more at the top just underneath the rope should finish it off.
The bottom of the triangle needs to be weighted heavily. A few big washers on the backside of it, a couple in the middle, and one or two up front should be a good start.

Jimmy should be able to bust that out in half an hour, and then the only challenge would be getting up in the trees to hang it.

There. That's it.

I have worked my ass off over the last two days for several hours weed eating greens/fairways, pruning, mowing, killing bees, planning the Throwdown, etc. etc.! I'm not the only one though, Team Innova was here the past two days and few weeks, Harold is always thinking and giving. Daniel Quin is also always there! Making the world a better place.

We still need help though! There is so much that could make it even better?

Ashe Park is "our course". 8)

A work day or two is in the plans before the Ice Bowl to make the course less slick and more safe! I put in stairs this week on the trail from holes 12->13 and on the downhill trail from 17->18. The freeze/defrost effect of the winter has turned parts of the course to into super slick mudd pits and is not only dangerous to throw from but also harmful to the course. More stairs, benches, and trail work needs to happen and my back and this course needs your help. :)

More stairs were put in today between Holes 17->18 as well as a long needed bench at the short teepad on hole 18!

Planning on going out next week and adding a few new pin positions (holes 4 and 14- long)!! :D

Would be super cool to see hole 5's basket get elevated before the Throwdown too!

Let me know if anybody can help?

Ashe Park DGC looks good, but it could be better.

The fairway on hole 18 needs a bit of clearing. I played on Monday and snapped off a few saplings with my hands. One of the stumps right in front of the tee pad was sprouting a bunch of saplings that were starting to interfere with the flight path. So I guess a weed-eater with a star blade would take care of it.

I hand pruned 18 yesterday and knew that stump had grown back thick. So when I got to it and saw it all beat to hell I thought maybe some bobcats were on the prowl... :| but then I remembered you had been there the day before and figured you had hooked it up by shredding it up. Thanks once again for your hard work but I went ahead and shaved it clean with a lot of other stumps and branches that were bushing out in the fairways of 9,15, and 18. Today 18's trails got weed-eated and the nasty rough patch of locust, thorns, and old pile of wood chips(last years worst bees nest) at the bottom of 18 in the middle of the clearing is now GONE! Its so much better now! Its level and smooth and no longer punishes good drives. :D

The Innova guys came into town today and along with the Ashe Co. Parks and Rec. staff they busted out a lot of course maintenance! :D The course is really looking good!

What's happening.....
-Hole 11's fairway is being stump grinded and cleared out a bit more for fairness.
-6 new teepads are being installed (Hole's 9, 14, 15, 16)
-Hole 5,6, 8, 12, 15, 17, 18 got pruned up nicely
-more log jams and erosion control on hole 3, 6, 14, 15 green, 17.
-Big limb on Pro 3 got cut for more of a bail out shot.

Gettin ready for the THROWDOWN in two weeks!! THANK YOU INNOVA DISC GOLF and ASHE Co. PARKS and REC.!!!!

Work continues tomorrow and Wednesday, so please if you have the time, stop in and lend a helping hand. 8)

Beyond what you just posted, TP, my next biggest request would be a bench for Pro 15. Luckily there are a couple of logs there that work okay, but I always feel I have to take a couple of minutes to sit down after playing 14 before I'm ready to launch 15.

After that, I think the thicket between 3 and 4 needs to be thinned just a bit. There will be a lot of discs flying in there from Am 3, and the place needs to be thinned out just enough to where it's possible for everyone to find their disc within a minute. I mean, there's no need to clear it out so much that it's easy to escape - if you're dumb enough to throw into it, you should be punished for it - but it should be possible to find your disc and not have to take a lost disc penalty or delay your group for several minutes.

Oh, and those benches on 16 are awesome.

I agree with TL that is a good idea. The benches on 16 are awesome i love how you can just walk in between them! 8) Ps. I lost 2 discs yesterday (my new FL and my viking so if anyone finds it ill give you a disc I hate or something or buy you a beer.)

Josh, there is a lost and found thread.

Progress continued on the course today, and the Innova guys should be finished up with their end of the deal tomorrow. We still need some mowing and weedeating done around some of the rough areas (inorder to speed play up), and logs placed on Hole's 3, 6, and 17 (to stop rollers on good shots). If you can help, please contact either Daniel or myself and we can point you in the right direction.

Need to give a shout out to the guys who helped work on Hole's 15 green this evening. Daniel, Josh, and I did most of the work. This will now help with the unfortunate roll aways, and it will also save our green from eroding away. Thanks!

We have busted ass all week on the course with the ass busting Innova crew and some gracious volunteers and I can't feel my arms. The course is looking so sweet you won't believe what all has been done!

Thank You!!! Todd P, Josh, and Harry for representing and hookin' it up!!! (course karma  )

And especially Innova for all their hard work and generosity. You guys roc!

...also the park staff and the kids doing community service deserve a shout-out as well.

Cleaned up a bunch of sticks and crap on 16's fairway today and did some work on the erosion bars as well. It's looking better but it still needs a lot more work clearing the downed branches and spreading more mulch up the fairway.

I also spread more grass seed on holes 14, 15 and 17. Holes 12 &13 could use some seed on them as well. Hopefully it grows!

Hole 9 needs some logs across its fairway soon. It is washing away quickly and folks continue to walk everywhere except the designed trail and stairs. A few strong people are needed to drag some trees to prevent further damage.

A club workday needs to happen but was not discussed at our last meeting so I am saying it now. To make this course all that it can be will take the help of the HCDGC and all of its members. This is our HOME course so lets start taking some ownership.

The park staff have been working hard to remove snow and downed limbs from the tee-pads and fairways so far this winter. The Ice Bowl is right around the corner and the weather just is not letting up at all. We are planning on there being a lot of snow on the ground for the tournament which is great and will be fun but need to have the tee-pads clear and safe to throw from. That being said, I/we might need some last minute help from some of the HCDGC members to lend a hand to help make this Ice Bowl as awesome and as safe as it can be. We will have to wait and see what the weather does between now and then. :?

A few people have contacted me about helping out (which is awesome!) and are planning on coming out to the park on Friday to help prepare the course. I think folks are meeting up about 10:00ish to start hooking it up. The snow is super crazy deep and is up to my waist in some spots. We still need to move a lot of snow and the more help we have the better things will be for Saturday's Ice Bowl including my shoulder and lower back.
Please make it out if you can and bring a shovel and some snow shoes.

Some of the Innova crew are coming to work on the course in the next week or so and will gladly welcome anyone that can come and help. One of the main projects they have planned is the building up of the green and basket area on short 17 kinda like on hole 15 but to a grander scale. This is to help with erosion and to preserve the mountainside that gets so trampled.
I will post again when I know the dates/weekend for sure. Thanks!
